January 08, 2006
I found James Capal's draft card on Ancestry.com. It was filled out in Newport, KY in Sept. of 1918. His sister's name is listed and her address. A great find! Susan.

Your mom told me that Bob told her many years ago that the name was orginally Kopstein, he was married before, and he lived in Chicago. Just recently she ran across her notes she took from Bob. I looked up Kopstein in the census records and came across a Steven Kopstein born abt 1884 in NY, living in Chicago, and his occupation was listed as Tailor. It describes James exact. James' middle name is Steven. He was born in Dec. of 1883, so census records would list 1884 if it was estimated. His wife's name on the census was Emma and they had two boys James and Steven. I came across a obit. posted on a message board and found one for Emily Stancel. The obit. gave the info that she married Charles Stancel in 1929, and it also listed her son by a previous marriage Steven Kopstein. The family was listed as living in Wisconsin. I found a Social Security for Steven Kopstein. It had the same year of birth as the census record did, and his SS# was issued in Chicago. Hope that all makes sense.
So James' original last name was Kopfstein? What was his first wife's name? How did you find out all this?
